The company latest history goes back to January 1st 2008.From that date a new, economically independent company started to work as a Rail Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Service Provider in the Hungarian home market, that is MÁV-GÉPÉSZET Private Company limited by Shares, a member of MÁV GROUP (Hungarian State Railways).

From activities and operational point of view this Company predecessorswere key organizational units of MÁV Co. ever. The very ancient time of Hungarian railway operation dated back to 1847, that is the launching date of the first rail line between (Buda)Pest and Vác (and Szolnok). Eleven years after the very starting date the first main home repair shop was operational.

MÁV-GÉPÉSZET is the market leader in the home Rail Repair Industrysegment today. The Company is committed to retain the existing leading role by permanently improving its service level quality and complexity toward its main traditional Business Partners – MÁV-START and MÁV-TRAKCIÓ – meanwhile seeking business sense cooperation opportunities with companies outside Hungary that are engaged with rolling stock operations or they are rail transport operators.

From January 1st 2006 MÁV Cargo became a legally and economically independent Freight Transport Company prepared for being privatized over time. By the end of 2008 the Company was purchased by Rail Cargo Austria AG. Its current company name is; „Rail Cargo Hungaria Zrt.”

The Passenger Transport Business Unit followed MÁV Cargo and became anindependent company taking over the tasks of rail passenger transport activities from mid 2007. MÁV-START believes that it can play a decisive role in public transport, and they are confident that there will be an improvement of community's respect in home and international rail travelling. In addition to the continuous technical and technological development of railway passenger transport one of their main objectives is to increase the number of those opts for the railway travelling as means of transport. It is important to continuously strengthen their social role as a Public Transport Service Provider.

MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Railway Traction Co. was founded on January 1st 2008 performing passenger and freight transport related traction and shunting activities on MÁV Group members demand. The Company intends to play active roles in the development of home rail traffic, staying a reliable Partner for state owned and private railway companies.

As the other determined organizational part of Rolling Stock Operation and Engineering Business Unit, the same time MÁV-GÉPÉSZET became an independent company as an actor in the rail vehicle maintenance & repair business segment. Repair Centers were merged six months after the establishment of the current economic entity. Today, the full operation of technical care is pulled together in the home market under the company control and all type of Rolling Stock vehicles are supported with these complex services.
